Hello! And welcome to my site all about jump-starters, my journey and experiences with finding, using the best ones, and how to get started (no pun intended!) If this is your first jump starter, or you’re simply looking to pick up knowledge along the way then this is a great resource. For example, if you’re wondering what multiple charging modes mean when you’re looking for the best jump starter, and why this matters, then read on.
We’ll take a brief, yet informative journey and help you determine what specific type of jump starter box makes sense for you, what type of setup, and what the easiest to use, premium built, durable, and reliable brands or models are. I’ve taken the time to carefully provide insight as to different types of mobile jump starters, from older designs and technology such as those that are basically made up of a battery and permanently attached jump cords, to the more advanced, mobile, and portable models that more easily fit into a smaller place in your trunk – or even emergency kit.
Typically, jump starters are relatively “self-servicing”, which means taking out the hassle, complications, or headache of asking a stranger, or worse, paying to have a service vehicle come out to give you the jump your vehicle’s battery needs.
How to find the best jump starter
At this point, you’re probably wondering, OK, but where do I start?
When I had my first car I actually purchased a “Portable Power Pack”. And essentially, this was just a sealed battery box, along with a pair of nice, durable what I assume to have been heavy-duty jumper cables that could be used anytime, anywhere. And essentially it did offer this, but with a few drawbacks.
First of all, this is great if you’re just looking to give your current car battery a “jump”, or helping someone else accomplish this. However, if you have a dead battery this will not help, as most alternators require a 12V charge from your current (presumably in this case dead) battery. So, let’s move forward onto the next type for those that might experience a dead battery, or be looking for something a little more sophisticated.
My next investment after trying the portable power pack jump starter was a ‘Plug-in Jump Starter’ (or charger) which essentially allowed me to power my battery between 2 and 10 amps, dependent upon what type you purchase, and the settings it includes. This is where customization comes into play, and why it’s important to explore your options, how they work, and what they’ll provide in a situation that total power delivered matters the most.
Last but not least, there is the more “modern” (albeit expensive) solution of investing in a ‘Jump Box’ which typically includes all the ‘bells and whistles’, extra features, is heavy duty (and often on the larger side), although also the most independent, reliable type of jump starter to use.

What to look for in a jump starter
As you search and consider the various types of jump starters available online keep in mind that they may vary not only per the power (amperage) or “amps” they output, but also for the specific (cylinder) or fuel type of vehicle that you have. For example, 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, and 8 cylinder engine vehicles that runs on regular fuel will require, respectively, 150-200 amps, 200-250 amps, and 250-300 amps powered jump starters for not only the best performance but also protecting your car – in particular, the alternator and other power systems. If you have a 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder, or 8 cylinder diesel vehicle then you should be looking for 300-400 amps, 400-500 amps, and 600-700 amps jump starters respectively – and as you can see here, diesel vehicles require dramatically more power in amperage (amps).
Have you taken into account what climates you will use or store your car in? What about travel? While most jump starter kits are designed to handle very low temperatures as little as 0 degrees Fahrenheit, or as much as 160 degrees Fahrenheit, some are more optimally designed for extreme weather – may it be cold or hot. This is significant, as your trunk in direct sunlight for example of in just 80 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside can easily cause the inside of your trunk to reach 130 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit or more. This doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily common for people to have trouble with this, but rather, doing your due diligence and research on what each jump starter is designed to handle or conditions to effectively work in can prolong the life and quality you get out of both the product and your car battery.
While it’s important that you choose a jump starter product that’s designed with heavy-duty clamps and an adequately sealed unit, it’s equally important to take into consideration the brand and reputation of the jump starter you’re considering. Some companies and models are well known for being more effective in some conditions than others, and of course, they are each made differently. On that note, try to find a jump starter kit that makes sense for you and your lifestyle, the demands of the road, and ensure that it’s the right size for you so that you can use it with ease and be on your way without further ado.
When considering the various types of jump starter kits, take into consideration what style is most practical. For example, if you are on the road frequently a jump box or portable power back – more affordable – may be the best choice for you. If you’re traveling a lot, and find yourself in a desolate place without power then using say a jump starter or plug-in type is probably not ideal. While these types of jump starters are helpful if your battery is completely dead, the last thing you want is to find yourself stranded. And speaking of power, pay careful attention to whether or not your jump starter is powered by 6V or 12V, as most modern sedans and SUV’s require a 12V charge.
Jump Starter Types
Given today’s technology there are numerous jump starter kits available on the market that can hold multiple charges, serve as a flashlight, emergency lights, or even charge your cell phone and electronics – should you ever become stranded, or just need a little extra “juice”.
Jump Boxes for example, while often pricier, are more on the “premium” end of the selection and are often powered by a reliable, sealed gel pack or lead acid battery which is the most modern, consistently performing battery charging system that is most likely to last you for years to come. It’s also sealed better in comparison to other jump starters because it’s a battery charging box, inside of an additional shell or “housing” unit for extra protection which is great for both weather and unwanted chemical spills or electric interactions with anything in your trunk. A lot of these “larger”, jump box solutions are also great because they might include an inverter, radio technology, or other added features.
For those that frequently travel locally, or in places where plugging in to get a charge or power a jump starter is not an issue non-portable model jump starters can be very effective. They are also built considerably well, and are designed to be easy to use. For those that can be powered by a car-lighter these can be helpful too if your car battery is dead or not charged. This however, would require the necessary plug-in power from either a friend’s car or a passerby if possible.
When deciding on the right jump starter, take into consideration multiple amperage settings, such as 2, 10, or 75 amps, and keep a close eye out for those that automatically adjust or respond with the necessary amperage that your battery needs. These types of jump starters provide the necessary amps based on its own inbuilt technology to gauge the remaining power left or required to get you moving again.
If however, you decide to go with a plug-in jump starter or charger then you’ll find that many models include a “trickle charge” technology which as mentioned above through multiple setting modes, will slowly feed the charge to your battery. Although not the most convenient, this is a good direction to go if you’re not in an urgent rush, emergency, and are willing to go the extra mile to preserve your alternator and car battery in the long-run.
For those that decide to go with a jump box or portable power pack, you’ll find these types to often be more portable, less heavy, and great for any situation where your battery has drained. Just keep in mind, unfortunately, jump boxes can’t charge a dead battery, which is a big benefit of the plug-in units. So, for those seeking more of a “home maintenance” or car battery recharging system, investing in a plug-in jump starter or charger can get you more ‘bang for your buck’.
I hope you’ve found this breakdown of the most current, popular, modern, simple, and semi-advanced jump starters available on the market helpful. I’m confident through both my personal experience in combination with the feedback from others on these various jump starter products that you’ll find the best choice for you and your needs.
You will find each of these jump starter product recommendations to be from reputable, established, and experienced manufacturers that really do great at designing efficient, long-lasting, and most importantly reliable jump starters to help get you out of tough situations or emergencies. Even better, the plug-in jump starter and model designs, along with the power packs are made to both charge your battery at home as needed. I’ve also included the best, most efficient jump starters for recharging your battery or having the best chance to give you a much-needed jump-start if your battery dies or needs a jump while out on the road. And while non-plug-in jump starters can’t recharge or jump in most cases a dead battery, the jump starters above were designed to include other emergency features to help you be seen, get help, or at a minimum charge your other devices to reach someone if and when the situation ever arises.
